What Is TMS Therapy?
At Serenity Mental Health Centers, we're proud to offer Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) as a cornerstone of our patient-first approach to mental wellness. TMS is a proven, noninvasive therapy that has been helping individuals navigate through the challenges of depression, anxiety, PTSD, OCD, and other mental health conditions for over four decades — without the need for medication. This therapy utilizes electromagnetic fields, akin to those used in MRI scans, to precisely target and activate brain regions that are less active in individuals with these conditions. TMS is a process that promotes the creation of new neural connections, offering a path to relief from the distressing symptoms associated with mental health issues. At our Phoenix, AZ office, we are committed to personalized care, meaning we work closely with each patient to explore their unique circumstances and consider whether TMS could be a beneficial part of their treatment plan.
How Is TMS Therapy Administered?
Our goal is to make healing accessible and possible for our patients by breaking down barriers to care. We're committed to ensuring that every TMS therapy session is a serene and uplifting experience. Patients are seated comfortably while our team administers TMS therapy, focusing on specific brain regions associated with mood regulation and emotional health. This noninvasive procedure does not involve surgery, anesthesia, or sedation, making it a straightforward and gentle approach to improving mental well-being.
What Can I Expect After TMS Therapy?
After completing TMS therapy treatment, many patients experience a noticeable improvement in their symptoms of depression and other mood disorders. The effects can include an enhanced mood, increased energy levels, and an overall better quality of life. While some individuals may notice changes as early as the first week of treatment, the most significant improvements typically become apparent a few weeks after the therapy has concluded. It's important to note that responses to TMS can vary; some patients might require additional sessions or maintenance treatments to sustain the benefits. Additionally, TMS therapy is generally well-tolerated, with few experiencing mild side effects such as scalp discomfort or headache during the initial sessions, which usually diminish over time.
What Are the Benefits of TMS Therapy?
- A Gentle, Outpatient Therapy: TMS offers a noninvasive, virtually pain-free experience without the need for surgery or anesthesia, enabling patients to remain at ease during treatment and quickly return to their daily routines.
- Backed by Research: A wealth of studies supports the efficiency of TMS in treating a range of mental health issues, including depression, anxiety, PTSD, and OCD, showcasing its role as a trusted method in mental health care.
- Minimal Side Effects, Maximum Comfort: The majority of individuals undergoing TMS therapy report experiencing few, if any, side effects. For those who do, side effects are typically minor, such as temporary headaches, which can be easily managed with common pain relief options.
- Customized Care for Every Patient: Our focus is on delivering care that is tailored to each patient's unique needs, ensuring that every TMS treatment plan and session is as effective and beneficial as possible.

Dr Prussing is a gem -- truly. Serenity Mental Health has been lucky to have her services. The entire office is incredibly friendly, professional, personable, and quick, but Dr Prussing has exercised prudent and compassionate care the entire time I have worked with her to manage my medication and mental health. I feel heard and seen when I am in an appointment with Dr Prussing; I feel like I have another human being sitting across from me who truly just wants to help another human being if she can. And she has helped me and my family tremendously with her expertise and judgement.
I went here initially to treat my adhd and then I was introduced to TMS and Ketamine therapies so I went back to treat my depression and anxiety. This has been such a great facility to go to for all of the above. The staff is so kind, professional, and goes above and beyond for their patients. These folks truly want their patients to succeed and I can see that. I highly recommend checking this place out. To the staff, thank you all for being the best at what you do! You’ve given me a stellar opportunity and the tools to continue my journey.

Who Is A Candidate for TMS Therapy?
Individuals who haven't found success with standard pharmacological treatments for conditions such as depression, anxiety, or other mood disorders may be good candidates for TMS therapy. This form of therapy is particularly advantageous for patients whose conditions have proven resistant to traditional treatments. Candidates should be diagnosed with a mood disorder by a healthcare professional and should not have any health conditions that magnetic therapy would complicate, like metal implants in the head or specific medical devices. TMS therapy is a nonsurgical option that can offer symptom relief without the side effects that are often associated with medications, presenting a promising alternative for patients in search of a different mental health treatment strategy.
